Getting Around in Sri Lanka
Public Transport
Sri Lanka boasts an extensive network of buses and trains. The blue Sri Lanka Railways trains are famed for their scenic journeys through misty mountains and lush tea fields. Long-distance intercity express buses and local minibuses (called 'CTB' or 'Private') cover almost every corner of the island.
Tip: Book your train tickets in advance, especially for the popular Kandy-Ella route!
Tuk-Tuks & Taxis
The most charming way to get around town! Tuk-tuks are everywhere — always negotiate a fair price before the ride, unless there's a working meter. App-based taxis like PickMe and Uber are available in most cities and are often cheaper and safer than hailing a random vehicle.
Rental Options
If you want to explore freely, rent a car or a scooter. International Driving Permit (IDP) with local validation is required to legally drive in Sri Lanka. Be cautious: roads can be narrow and chaotic.
Domestic Flights & Helicopters
For travelers short on time, domestic flights from Colombo to major cities like Jaffna and Trincomalee are available. Private heli charters also offer spectacular aerial views and quick getaways.

✔️ Avoid rush hours in Colombo (7:30-9:00am, 4:30-6:30pm).
✔️ Use ride-hailing apps whenever possible for better rates.
✔️ Double-check transport schedules on official websites or stations.
