Introduction

As Vesak Poya Day approaches (12th May), we’d like to give an exciting introduction to this sacred day and show you wonderful ways to truly experience its beauty.

Sri Lanka is a country where the majority of the population is Buddhist, and Vesak Poya Day is celebrated on a grand scale. It is believed that Lord Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, and passed away on Vesak Poya — making it one of the most sacred days for Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

Dansals

In true Sri Lankan tradition, Vesak Poya Day is a day for giving, and locals organize dansals all over the island. A dansal is a free food giveaway offered in the Vesak spirit to anyone and everyone. The food can range from ice cream to rice & curry. Be prepared for long queues as many gather for these generous offerings.
